No início do Século XX, a França atraía muitos brasileiros, que iam para lá atrás de estudos ou de sua intensa vida cultural. São Paulo começava a experimentar um grande crescimento, graças aos recursos provenientes da cafeicultura. O Prof. Levasseur, administrador do Collège de France, e o Prof. Appell, da Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Paris, entendiam que os laços de amizade, as afinidades racial e linguística e a semelhança de orientação cultural eram motivos suficientes para construir um centro cultural em São Paulo. Nessa época, foi criada na Sorbonne a cadeira de Estudos Brasileiros, que proporcionou um intercâmbio permanente entre intelectuais franceses e brasileiros.
Em 1908, o renomado médico e psicólogo francês Georges Dumas veio em missão cultural e estabeleceu, junto com Charles Richet, os primeiros contatos para criar aqui um liceu franco-brasileiro. Entre seus interlocutores, estavam grandes expressões da cultura paulista e brasileira. Carlos Botelho e Bittencourt Rodrigues, a que se uniram Víctor da Silva Freire e Ramos de Azevedo, Frederico Steidel, Ruy de Paula Souza, Alfredo Pujol, Américo Brasiliense, Augusto Carlos da Silva Telles, Cyridião Buarque, José Carlos de Macedo Soares, José Frederico de Borba, Oscar de Sá Campello, Reynaldo Porchat, Júlio Mesquita e João Alves de Lima. A eclosão da I Guerra Mundial adiou o sonho da nova escola por alguns anos. No dia 17 de maio de 1923, foi criado oficialmente o Lyceu Franco-Brasileiro “S. Paulo”.
