A história da fundação e do desenvolvimento da Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes inicia-se com a criação da Organização Mogiana de Educação e Cultura (OMEC), em 1962. Nessa época, com o objetivo de oferecer mais oportunidades educacionais à população da cidade de Mogi das Cruzes e região, o então Presidente da OMEC, Professor Manoel Bezerra de Melo, fundou uma escola de ensino fundamental – um “ginásio” como era chamado na época.
O “ginásio” atendeu à demanda e, por isso mesmo, prosperou e cresceu a ponto de buscar sua própria continuidade, com a implantação de cursos superiores, o que se concretizou em 1964, com o funcionamento da Faculdade de Filosofia, Ciências e Letras, autorizada pelo Conselho Federal de Educação com os Cursos de Filosofia, Letras, Pedagogia e Ciências Sociais. Outros cursos foram sendo implantados no decorrer do tempo até que, em 1973, a Instituição foi credenciada como Universidade de Mogi das Cruzes – UMC, sendo 1ª Universidade particular criada no Estado de São Paulo e 2ª no Brasil.
